This week, dedicated members of the Tennessee Association of EMS Providers (TAEMSP) actively participated in critical discussions at the recently reconvened EMS Board committees, focusing on Clinical Issues, Air Ambulance, and Education. The collaborative efforts paved the way for impactful decisions during the subsequent State EMS Board meeting on Wednesday and Thursday.

During the sessions, the EMS Board addressed vital business matters and deliberated on adverse action cases. Notably, the Clinical Issues Committee introduced a groundbreaking initiative—an innovative buckle lock guard designed to safely restrain individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others. The Board approved the device for individual case use, considering specific circumstances rather than a permanent installation on the stretcher.

Further discussions led to the green light for a new supraglottic airway device and sparked conversations around umbilical vein cannulation, highlighting the commitment to staying at the forefront of evolving EMS technologies and practices. The Education Committee presented plans to enter into rulemaking for an EMT to paramedic pathway, a topic of ongoing discussion for several years. Additionally, a dedicated workgroup was formed to address impending changes to NREMT practical requirements and state EMS rules.

In a proactive move, the Committee on Committees is now accepting recommendations for additional members of the Education Committee, particularly from directors or educators representing Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology. Interested individuals can submit their CV, Letter of Interest, and time commitment to the State Office of EMS.

The EMS Board also conducted a contested case hearing on Thursday before adjourning for the final time in 2023. The next meeting is scheduled for February 26 & 27, with further details available on the Tennessee Department of Health website at www.tn.gov/health.

TAEMSP encourages professionals to join its growing community and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of EMS in Tennessee.
